If you're stuck in the exercise doldrums, perk
up your routine with some new forms of fitness.
Cardio-boxing
Inspired by martial arts and boxing, this exercise
combines self-defense with aerobic conditioning,
strength and muscular endurance.
Gymnastic
Balls
These vinyl, air-filled balls are used for strength,
flexibility and balance exercises. Many gymnastic
ball workouts incorporate non-impact aerobic movement
using the balls.
NIA (Neuromuscular
Integrative Action)
This exercise blends techniques of jazz dance,
martial arts, yoga and African dance. Chakra and
qi -- Eastern energetic concepts -- are usually
employed. This is a non-impact aerobic workout.
Pilates
Pilates involves a series of controlled movements
focusing on improving flexibility and abdominal
strength without building bulk.
Qi Gong
Literally, qi gong means "energy cultivation,"
referring to exercises that improve health and
longevity while increasing the sense of harmony
within oneself and within the world.
Step
Aerobics
A form of aerobics that utilizes variable-level
boxes or steps. You step on and off the boxes repeatedly,
building lower body strength as well as cardiovascular
endurance.
Spinning
Indoor stationary cycling that incorporates imagery
into an intense aerobic workout. Spinning also
demands interval bursts of anaerobic power.
Tai Chi
This is a Chinese system of physical exercise
designed especially for self-defense and meditation,
while increasing strength, flexibility and balance.
